Brief History:
The Rajaghara bandha is also known as the Purusottam Sagar . This pond was built in the middle of 17th century by king Brajamohan Deo , the second last king of kalahandi . There is a story behind the construction of this pond . One day in the king’s dream , his Esta Goddess Maa Manikeswari appeared and ordered him to built the pond for the welfare of people. After pond was completed, small and large slums and temples were built around it and many more people depended on the pond for drinking water , bathing and washing clothes. The famous temple of maa manikeswari also situated near this pond . So many devotees have always visit this place .
Socio-religious significance:
The people of Bhawanipatna believes water of these pond to be very holy . This is because the pond was built by the order of Maa Manikeswari . There are many large and small temples around this pond . One of those temples Maa manikeswari temple is one of them . It is a very famouse temple of kalahandi and it is specially famous for it’s chatter jatra . This yatra is celebrated at the temple every year . Many devotees from far and wide come to see the yatra . At the beginning of the yatra this pond’s water is used to bath the Goddess. In the Bhawanipatna this pond’s water is considered holy for the disposal of idols of God ,Goddes and worship objects .
Economic significance:
Fisher man Cultivate fish in this pond . But due to water pollution fishe Cannot be farmed in large quantity .
