The village of Nildunguri is a scenic village in Odisha’s Sambalpur district. Every house has a toilet with a twin-pit containment system, which makes the village ODF +. The villagers use the manure obtained from the pit in their fields and kitchen gardens. Greywater flows through the village’s open drainage system. Occasionally, plastic and other wastes clog up these drains.
On the eve of World Toilet Day 2021, the youth of the village took action to make their village green and clean. A village cleanliness drive was conducted in which the village area was cleaned by collecting plastic waste and depositing it in a designated area. Also, they collected plastic waste to clean the open drains. In addition, the youth cleaned the area near the water source. To keep their roads clean, the youths swept the village’s roads. The collected solid waste was sent to the Gram Panchayat for further segregation and disposal.
Youth in this village demonstrated that where there is a will, there is a way. They organized a village cleanliness drive and invited other members of the community to join them in this initiative.
Youth were made aware of the #Youth4Water Campaign during our visit to the village. They were encouraged to follow our social media accounts. The youth encouraged others to join the #Youth4Water Campaign.
